Menaga S.L., a company specialised in the manufacturing of welded steel equipment and special welding solutions, turned to Easyworks to strengthen and support its engineering department due to the shortage of specialised technical personnel in the labour market. Easyworks was entrusted with the nozzle engineering area.
What is a nozzle?
A nozzle is a component designed to improve a vessel’s speed performance while delivering significant fuel savings, which can reach up to 20%. These systems are manufactured with different hydrodynamic profiles — wing-shaped structures that surround the propeller to optimise water flow. In other words, the primary function of the propeller-nozzle system is to increase vessel speed and propulsion efficiency while reducing fuel consumption.
In summary, it improves the efficiency of the vessel’s propulsion system. In some cases, adding a nozzle to the propeller can result in an estimated speed increase of around 5–20% and a reduction in fuel consumption of 5–20%.
What is the workflow for creating manufacturing drawings of a nozzle?
First, all the necessary information for the design and modelling of the nozzle is gathered. This includes the vessel’s key displacement data, as well as its power and propulsion specifications, along with material requirements, which in many cases involve dissimilar grades of steel.
Easyworks solution
Using SOLIDWORKS, our engineers carry out the structural and schematic development, which is then used to generate plasma cutting drawings and step-by-step manufacturing drawings. This approach streamlines the construction process in line with Menaga’s Lean Manufacturing implementation. In addition, it increases agility, allowing required client-driven modifications to be implemented quickly and efficiently when needed.
Once the nozzle design and modelling are completed, it is sent to the client for validation of the design prior to manufacturing. This review takes into account the regulatory calculations required by the classification society, as well as integration within the vessel.
Our engineers, leveraging the capabilities provided by the software as well as the client’s manufacturing expertise, take into account the deformations caused during mechanical forming and welding processes. This allows them to anticipate the maximum tolerances within which the part must be manufactured, ensuring that once fabrication is completed, it remains within the required specifications.
It is worth highlighting that strong design and process engineering ensures significant time savings and reduces the likelihood of manufacturing errors, thereby optimising costs and productivity.
At Easyworks, in all our projects, we adapt to the client’s design and manufacturing processes to deliver documentation aligned with their production and working standards.
Thank you to Menaga for their trust in us. ♥
